This adaptation uses the twentieth-century Black church to examine structures constraining Black women.
This adaptation examines the opera's underlying themes of constraint and blame placed on women for male's behavior. Typically set in southern Spain in the late 1800s, we see the society's negative reaction to Carmen as a free woman in control of her sexuality. 200 years later, we still see the limitations and condemnation of women who own their autonomy.
Leveraging that idea, the scenic design used the architecture of the Black Church in the early twentieth-century to investigate this historical structure which often limits and constrains Black women.
